Resident Evil

Here is a totally commercial, really very hollywood and exceedingly cliched film based upon a computer game.

None of the ideas are new in this film, you know exactly what is going to happen and when, and it's just a matter of time before you smile and say "ooh...you're SO dead".

And the film totally kicks ass!

For those of you who are unacquainted with the original games (of which there are several) you are basically attempting to survive whilst a horde of and other, tougher creatures attempt to devour you (and they're not patient enough to wait until you're actually dead, either). In a slight departure from the games, the movie starts with a crack team of troopers entering "The Hive" a secret underground biological, viral and genetic research facility run by the world's largest supplier of computers, peripherals and medical products, the Umbrella Corp. The entire place is full of dead people, and the team believes the computer that controls the facility (which has JUST enough intelligence to be really quite scary) has gone nuts and killed all the people that worked there. Of particular credit was the total avoidance of the word "zombie". I thought it was a stroke of genius.

That's enough of the plot. Suffice it to say, it's a brain-dead action film with lots of scary things in it. The in-cinema version is MA15+, but if there isn't an rated director's cut out there, then I'm a T-Virus infected walking undead person. A *lot* of potential gore was left out of this film, and I dare say the director was just itchin' in his britches to add lots of exploding body parts to the final cut.

This film is a cross between Aliens, The Living Dead Series, and Tomb Raider. It does it very well, provided you aren't going in for a story line, much of a plot, or amazing plot twists that have you gasping for air. What is DOES have is a lot of guns, things getting made dead (several times), nasty things that make you jump, half-melted dogs and something that's not actually all that human.

It also has Mila Jovovich in various stages of being nude. Twice. This alone was worth $12. However she also pulls off some rather remarkable fight scenes and stunts.

The special effects are nothing short of amazing (and I might add there was little 'matrix' style stuff done, which considering everything else is a credit to the producers).

The soundtrack is rocking, with all your favorites lined up to add lots and lots of hardness to the movie.

If you're into this sort of thing, go and watch it in cinema or you'll miss out on most of the good SFX.
